Download PS3 Firmware for ArmSX3

ArmSX3 will not boot a game without PlayStation 3 system software. It is one file, PS3UPDAT.PUP, and it does not come with the app.

PS3UPDAT.PUP

PlayStation 3 system software · 196.6 MB

Download PS3UPDAT.PUP
  • System software version: 4.92
  • Size: 206,177,436 bytes (196.6 MB)
  • Format: SCEUF update package, the same container the console reads
  • SHA-256: 99c044293290d0338ffee4ea7d21f993523b1b69012af7f09ae719efe2c9d464

The checksum is there so you can tell a complete download from a truncated one. On Android, a file manager such as Material Files will show it; on a desktop, sha256sum PS3UPDAT.PUP or certutil -hashfile PS3UPDAT.PUP SHA256.

Keep the name as PS3UPDAT.PUP. Android browsers like to append a number when a file of the same name already exists, and PS3UPDAT(1).PUP is the kind of thing that gets picked by mistake later.

Why ArmSX3 needs it

ArmSX3 is a port of RPCS3, the PlayStation 3 emulator, so it needs the same thing a real PS3 needs: Sony's system software. The emulator decrypts the package and installs its contents into dev_flash, its stand-in for the console's internal flash memory, where the system libraries that every PS3 game calls into then live.

Without it, ArmSX3 installs and runs, the interface works and your library scans, but launching a game stops at a Missing Firmware dialog. The project's own README puts it plainly: running it needs PS3 firmware, which is not included.

How to Install PS3 Firmware on ArmSX3

Six steps, and only the waiting takes any time.

  1. Download PS3UPDAT.PUP

From the link above. Leave the filename alone and note the folder it went into — usually Download.

  2. Open ArmSX3

A fresh install opens on a three-step setup screen, and step two is PS3 firmware. If you have used the app before and skipped that step, tap the menu icon in the top left: the first item in the drawer reads Firmware: None until firmware is installed.

  3. Start the firmware picker

In setup, tap Select PS3UPDAT.PUP. From the drawer, tap the Firmware row itself. Both open Android's file picker.

  4. Choose the file

Find PS3UPDAT.PUP and select it. The picker is not filtered by file type, so check that you are handing it the PUP and not a game.

  5. Wait for the install to finish

ArmSX3 decrypts the package, writes it into dev_flash, then precompiles the PS3 system modules to ARM64 so games are not stalled by them later. That compile is most of the wait — several minutes on a mid-range phone. A progress ring runs beside the Firmware entry in the drawer. Leave it be; do not start a game underneath it.

  6. Confirm the version

When it finishes, the drawer reads Firmware: 4.92 instead of Firmware: None. Games will boot from here.

Firmware is only half of it

The setup screen asks for two things, and firmware is the one it will not let you past. The other is your own game dumps — an .iso, a folder dump with PS3_DISC.SFB in it, or a .pkg you install from the drawer. ArmSX3 ships no games and never will. Some titles also need a .rap licence file alongside the package.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is the PlayStation 3 system update package Sony publishes for the console itself. It carries the operating system and the system libraries that PS3 games call into. ArmSX3 decrypts it and installs its contents into a folder called dev_flash, which is the emulator's stand-in for the console's internal flash memory.

The 4.92 file linked on this page. PS3 games declare a minimum firmware version and retail titles never asked for anything close to it, so 4.92 clears them all. Newer system software exists for the console itself, but it is not what this page offers and not what these instructions describe.

Sony publishes PS3UPDAT.PUP free on its own website for anyone with a PS3, which is why the file can be linked at all. Read Sony's system software licence before you use it.

ArmSX3 does not only unpack the firmware, it precompiles the PS3 system modules to ARM64 ahead of time so games do not stall on them later. That work is the bulk of the wait, and it happens once.

The app installs and the interface works, but launching a game stops with a Missing Firmware dialog. The firmware is a hard requirement, not a recommendation, and no setting works around it.

No. PS3 firmware is not region-locked, so one PUP covers every region. There is no USA, PAL or Japan version to choose between.

Yes. ArmSX3 is a port of RPCS3 and both take the same PS3UPDAT.PUP. In desktop RPCS3 the menu item is File then Install Firmware.
